什么是知识?知识是一个模糊的概念(a slippery concept)，没有人能从正面给予其一个定义(a comprehensive and irrefutable definition)而不被轻易地驳倒。但我们知道知识不是什么，它不是告诉我们简单事实的信息(information that gathers simple facts)，也不仅仅是个人或团体的信念或观点(belief that cannot be supported by empirical evidence)。人类通过将信息抽象化得到知识(abstracting information)，并可以在其他时机和情景下(at different times and in other contexts)通过新的解读运用，以创新的方式处理完全陌生的问题(deal with entirely new situations in creative ways)。虽然知识不能直接给予人类物欲的满足，比如一顿饱餐或增加求偶成功的概率。但当我们参与知识问答或定睛看找茬图片时，大脑里负责食物和性的区域也会活跃起来，这说明我们将知识也视为类似的“首要奖赏”(primary reward)。虽然很多知识出现之初并没有显著的实际功用，但却往往能带来意想不到的好处。比如说使得无线电通讯成为可能的电磁理论(electromagnetic waves)：如果没有麦斯威尔和赫兹关于电磁的研究，也就不会有马可尼发明无线电。这就是20世纪30年代美国普林斯顿大学的校长亚伯拉罕•弗莱克斯纳 (Abraham Flexner)教授所说的“The usefulness of useless knowledge”。(无用之学的有用性)
