什么是知识？知识是一个模糊的概念（a slippery concept），没有人能从正面给予其一个定义（a comprehensive and irrefutable definition）而不被轻易地驳倒。但我们知道知识不是什么，它不是告诉我们简单事实的信息（information that gathers simple facts），也不仅仅是个人或团体的信念或观点（belief that cannot be supported by empirical evidence）。人类通过将信息抽象化得到知识（abstracting information），并可以在其他时机和情景下（at different times and in other contexts）通过新的解读运用，以创新的方式处理完全陌生的问题（deal with entirely new situations in creative ways）。虽然知识不能直接给予人类物欲的满足，比如一顿饱餐或增加求偶成功的概率。但当我们参与知识问答或定睛看找茬图片时，大脑里负责食物和性的区域也会活跃起来，这说明我们将知识也视为类似的“首要奖赏”（primary reward）。虽然很多知识出现之初并没有显著的实际功用，但却往往能带来意想不到的好处。比如说使得无线电通讯成为可能的电磁理论（electromagnetic waves）：如果没有麦斯威尔和赫兹关于电磁的研究，也就不会有马可尼发明无线电。这就是20世纪30年代美国普林斯顿大学的校长亚伯拉罕•弗莱克斯纳 (Abraham Flexner)教授所说的“The usefulness of useless knowledge”。（无用之学的有用性）
