美国精神科类的药物滥用问题存在已久，而且正日趋严重（rearing its ugly head）。科学美国人的这篇报道发现，医生和家人常常给自闭症患者更换药物和加大剂量，却不但没有带来持久的积极效果，而且还引发了严重的毒副作用（toxicity）。研究发现在超过33000位21周岁以下的罹患自闭症的人中有35%同时服用两种精神药物，更有15%以上的人同时服用三种。通常医生会为了减轻一种药物的副作用而开第二种新的药物（assuage the unsettling effects），而在病人对一种药物产生抗药性之后（鉴于精神药物大多数有兴奋作用，长时间服用会令人失去对其的敏感性）又加大剂量或者换药。这种简单而粗暴的治疗方式不仅风险极大，而且成效甚低，因为自闭症的诱发原因很多（underlying cause），每位病人的情况和生理都不一样（biochemistry may be different overall），故而对药物的反应也因人而异。
