Higher education：The attack of MOOCs

DOTCOM mania was slow in coming to highereducation, but now it has the venerable industry firmly in its grip. Since thelaunch early last year of Udacity andCoursera, two Silicon Valley start-upsoffering education through MOOCs,massive open online courses, the ivory towersof academia have been shaken to their foundations. University brands built insome cases over centuries have been forced to contemplate the possibility thatinformation technology will rapidly make their existing business model obsolete.Meanwhile, the MOOCs have multipliedin number, resources and studentrecruitment--- without yet having figured outa business model of their own.

Coursera has foundpartner-ships with 83 universities and colleges around the world, includingmany of America’s top-tier institutions.
